TRUTH vs TRICK: What Every Parent Should Know Before Booking a Kids Entertainer in Sydney

With recent news in Sydney about a string of childcare centres failing to keep children safe, it’s more important than ever to make sure anyone you invite to your child’s party is trustworthy and fully certified.

After 26 years of performing as a trusted kids magician in Sydney, I’ve built my reputation on safety, trust, lower prices and real magic.

But lately, I’ve seen something worrying:

Fake reviews. Fake awards. Unsafe performers.

Some so-called “kids party magicians” aren’t even cleared to work with children—but they’re still getting bookings thanks to:

  • Flashy ads

  • Doctored websites

  • Purchased awards and fake 5-star reviews

  • dishonesty on their websites, keeping vital info from you

Common tricks some performers use:

Fake reviews
Look closely—are all their reviews:

  • From overseas accounts?

  • Suddenly posted within a few days?

  • From people who have never reviewed any other local business?

Did you know?

You can purchase reviews for google and facebook for as little as $5 a review for an Australian account to review your business.

and if you don't care what country reviews you can get get over 100 reviews for $14

as a business we get a ton of spam offering us fake reviews and even fake business awards we can buy

Fake awards
Awards like the “APAC Business Awards” sound impressive, but they’re vanity awards—meaning you pay to win them. They're not peer-reviewed or based on real performance. you too could win an apec award for the low cost of $300

No safety checks or credentials
Some don’t list a Working With Children Check, liability insurance, or show real footage from live kids party magic shows.
it is safe practice that the owner of a business that hires out children entertainers has a valid working with children check- There is a magician in Sydney who had but lost his wwcc but doesn't mention that on his website.

No Public Liability Insurance
Many parents don’t realize this, but public liability insurance is a must-have for any kids party entertainer. Without it, you could be left liable if an accident or injury happens during the show. Always ask to see proof of insurance before booking.

there is a magician in Sydney who  claims not to have public liability
right at the bottom of his home page he has in light grey text on a white background
"I don't have Public Liability Insurance (PLI) as my act has no real risk. You can read about the reasons for PLI on business.gov.au. If this is a problem, find another magician and please don't contact me."

so if the child runs up to his table and it falls on the child he has no way to pay for the doctors bills

here is the text on his site
and here is a highlighted link so you can actually read it

Here’s how to protect your child’s party in Sydney:

  1. Verify their Working With Children Check (WWCC)
In NSW, you can check it here:
Check WWCC Status – Service NSW

  2. Look for real, local reviews
Do the reviewers live in Sydney or nearby?
Have they reviewed other local businesses?
Are the reviews spaced out over time—not all from one week?
look for real (not AI) video reviews
Agencies will have loads of reviews- but are they of the review of the performer turning up to YOUR party?

  3. Ask for real performance videos
A professional kids party magician will have live footage—not just promo reels. again theres an agency in Sydney that says they don't want to ruin the surprise by showing video.

  4. Insurance- make sure the performer you have at your event has it- double check their name and the date- plenty of entertainers send out of date public liability in the hope you'll gloss over that info
  5. Be careful when booking through agencies: many agencies list entertainers without any real show videos, making it hard to verify their skills or experience. Always ask for video evidence directly from the performer before booking to ensure you’re getting a true professional.

Beware of agency commissions and hidden fees
Some booking agencies take a large cut of the client’s payment, meaning the performer gets only a fraction of what you pay. For example, companies like Yabadoo charge clients over $330 for a kids party entertainer for 1 hour, but performers often receive as little as $85 per gig.

You can see the details here of a company advertising for their entertainers (on a school jobs board):
Yabadoo kids party entertainer job listing

do you think the magician getting $85 is going to be as good as the one charging $325? or $200?

This big gap means entertainers may be less experienced or less motivated, as they’re paid far less than the client’s fee suggests. If you want the best magic for your child’s party, consider booking directly with a trusted professional who is fairly compensated for their skills. Good magicians don't need to work through agencies
